What does a therapist do?

Finding the right therapy

Different therapy is used for different areas, this can range from group, online, family and one on one therapy for example. Different therapist may specialise in one area or multiple areas, so it’s important to find the right therapist for your needs. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT is aimed to help you explore and change your thoughts towards the negative side of life. It also allows you to release yourself from unhelpful or negative patterns of behaviour.

How does CBT work?

You’ll work closely with your therapist and set goals and tasks to be carried out throughout your sessions or between sessions. CBT can be carried out anywhere from 5 to 20 sessions, each session being 30 to 60 minutes.

Why CBT?

CBT is effect and shown to work for a variety of mental health conditions. Here is a short list for more information:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Panic disorders and attacks
  • Phobias
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorders)
  • OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)
  • Eating disorders

Guided self-help

Guided self-help can be a powerful form of a therapy for some types of depression, anxiety, panic disorders and OCD. You can use guided self-help to work through CBT courses with the support of a trained therapist.

How does guided self help work?

Guided self-help works by helping you make a positive change in your life. You work with a therapist to understand problems and concerns and perform self-help readings to find solutions towards these problems. The therapist works with you to produce helpful tools and techniques that can be used in conjunction with your own research and learning.

There will be periods during this type of therapy where you will sit face to face with your therapist or via video call or over the phone.

Guided self-help

Counselling

Counselling is our most common forms of therapy here at South Asian Therapy. It is a type of therapy where you talk in confidence with your counsellor. They then work with you to find ways of dealing with any struggles you may have in your daily life.

There are a range of reasons why counselling might be right for you, a few examples are listed below:

  • Struggling with some forms of depression
  • Coping with life events, such as bereavement
  • Struggling with fertility problems

There are various forms of counselling, counselling for depression is a specially developed therapy to help people understand the underlying reasons behind their depression.

Behavioural Activation

Behavioural activation is a form of therapy that is focused on helping individuals with depression to take simple steps and techniques that allow them to enjoy life. It can be done in a range of styles, including face to face, group and over the phone.

The goal of behavioural activation

The aim of this talking therapy is to make small, but positive changes that can help improve your daily life. You’ll learn problem-solving skills and techniques to help tackle the problems that effect your mood.

Interpersonal therapy

Interpersonal therapy or IPT, is aimed to help tread people with depression identify and address problems in their family life, with their partner or with their friends. Poor relationships within your life can leave you feeling depressed, and this depression can lead to a further breakdowns of your relationships. Causing a cycle of mood and loneliness.

How does IPT work?

IPT can be used for mild cases of depression and for those who haven’t responded well to other therapy, such as CBT. Session are either face to face or over the phone and typically around 16 to 20 sessions are needed.

Mindfulness therapy

Mindfulness based therapy is used to help you focus on your feeling in the moment. Focusing on these thoughts and feelings as they happen is a great way to deal with depression, anxiety and stress. It uses breathing techniques and meditation to help manage your thoughts and understand how they make you feel.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy

This form therapy looks to uncover your subconscious mind and understand how previous traumas and experiences could be effecting you today. Childhood and previous experiences can be having a negative effect on your thoughts, feelings, relationships and behaviour within your subconscious.

How does psychodynamic psychotherapy work?

Typically this form of therapy is done one-on-one and face to face. You’ll talk in-depth, openly and honestly about your thoughts and feelings. The therapist will typically take notes and will be able to recommend techniques and skills to help overcome these feelings. Short term psychodynamic psychotherapy can be a great way to understand your deeper mind, and allow you to move onto other forms of therapy to deal with this.

Couples therapy

Couples therapy is exactly what it sounds like, couples having therapy together. It isn’t just about fixing and repairing relationships, but helps people with depression that can be linked to singular relationship or multiple.
