About me

Hi, I’m Sunny Patel, and I’m so glad you’re here.

As a South Asian therapist who grew up navigating the dualities of being American-born with early experiences in India, I know how complex it can feel to balance cultural expectations, family dynamics, and your own sense of self. I’ve been there—the push and pull between tradition and individuality, the pressure to meet the “good” son expectations, and the desire to break free and forge my own path.

My journey led me to earn Master’s degrees in Communication and Couples and Family Therapy, and specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support trauma healing. Today, I’m honored to be one of the few South Asian male therapists who deeply understands the intersections of culture, identity, and mental health.

I’m passionate about trauma work, cultural dynamics, and intergenerational healing. Whether it’s unpacking the unspoken rules of our communities, healing from past wounds, or finding your voice in relationships, I’m here to support you. I strive to create a safe and welcoming space, especially for those who feel caught between worlds or who may have been “othered” even within their own families.

As a male therapist, I bring transparency, authenticity, and vulnerability into our work together. I know how difficult it can be to talk about mental health in our culture, where strength and resilience are often seen as silence and endurance. But I also know how powerful it can be to reclaim your story and live more fully and authentically.

My approach is grounded in evidence-based practices like EMDR, Narrative Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT). I always adapt my work to honor your unique history and cultural context, meeting you where you are with compassion and understanding.

Beyond the therapy room, I’m committed to destigmatizing mental health in South Asian communities through outreach and education. I’m continually challenging systemic oppression and expanding my skills through ongoing education and training.

Outside of work, I find joy in spending time with loved ones, practicing mindfulness in nature, and advocating for marginalized communities. You might also find me lost in my comic collection or engaging in conversations that bring real change.

My clients often tell me, “You really get it. You understand my cultural and immigrant experiences.” I’d love to offer you that same understanding and support.
