Take a quick second to acknowledge and celebrate your strength for having brought you here today! You’ve got this!
I’m Sowmya (she/her), an Indian immigrant currently practicing as a Marriage and Family Therapist in Chicago. The sense of community and support have been the highlights of my experience as an immigrant. As your therapist, I will strive to create a safe space for you to explore, hold and value your unique narrative.
Therapy can be a challenging and often new experience for our community, the narrative of “log kya kahenge” is one that we’ve all heard at some point. It’s absolutely understandable that talking to someone outside your immediate support network can seem daunting, it is for these reasons that my approach to therapy is both, strength focused, and collaborative. Building relationships take time, it is essential that you give yourself the time to build an alliance with your therapist before you feel comfortable navigating life’s challenges with them. A strong therapeutic alliance is key to a meaningful experience in therapy. My training in the integrative systemic framework along with my lived experience as an immigrant allows me to support you as you explore the intersections of your identity. During our sessions, we’ll lean into curiosity, humor and vulnerability, often engage in play (yes, adults too!), art, mindfulness and a variety of other modalities (maybe a few bollywood referneces) based on what YOU need as you work towards your goals.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals and couples as they navigate their experience of trauma, socio-cultural stress, cultural/bi-cultural identity, life transition, anxiety and depression. I continue to strive towards creating safe spaces for members of our community to explore and fully embrace the uniqueness and beauty they bring to every space they’re in! Id you feel like I’d be a good fit for you, please reach out and I’d be happy to join you on this journey!
