About me

I am a Cambridge MA based clinical psychologist. I specialize in the treatment of couples and have over 15 years of specialty training and experience as a couples therapist. I am a Board Certified Psychologist in Couples + Family Psychology and have extensive experience working with couples who are struggling with emotional disconnection, high conflict interactions, rebuilding trust after infidelity, communication issues, parenting differences, attachment ruptures, sexual disorders and sexual preferences/discrepancy desires, intercultural and sociocultural issues, and difficult South Asian family dynamics. I also offer couples coaching and consultations sessions to couples outside of MA.

I am a former staff psychologist and group coordinator at Mental Health & Counseling at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where I worked for 7 years. I am on the board of directors and a faculty member at the Psychodynamic Couples and Family Institute of New England, former faculty at the Couples Conference, supervisor for doctoral students at MassArt, and an adjunct professor at Harvard School of Graduate Education and Boston University’s PhD. program in Counseling Psychology. I am also a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant with VISIONS, Inc. I completed my undergraduate studies at Cornell University and my masters and doctoral studies at the University of Denver.

My therapeutic approach draws from emotionally focused, psychodynamic, cultural contextual, transactional analysis, humanistic/existential, and cognitive-behavioral models. Being an integrative practitioner allows me to be emotionally attune and exploratory to clients who want a more dynamic and insight oriented therapy and active in structured problem solving and skill development for clients who want a more short term or solution focused approached. I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to learn about themselves, regardless of what particular issues bring them to therapy. I emphasize utilizing a client’s unique background, values, and strengths to help in the change process.

I currently am recruiting for a South Asian Women’s Process and Support Group open to members within and outside the US. Information can be found here: https://sejalpatelpsyd.com/south-asian-group-therapy
