I began my career assisting families dealing with addiction, domestic violence, sexual abuse and child neglect, in their homes. This experience had a significant influence on my decision to become a therapist and my approach to treatment.
My practice areas for individual therapy include, relationship challenges, academic and career management, childhood trauma, as well as, intergenerational disconnect. As an Indian-Caribbean therapist, I can relate to the immigrant experience and being part of a marginalized community.
Sometimes, external pressures and expectations can drive our decisions, instead of our own core values. I enjoy helping individuals to examine and re-write their narratives and learn how to make choices that are more aligned with their beliefs.
In couples therapy, I explore concepts such as attachment style, communication, and cultural differences. For example, a couple struggling to manage conflict with their in-laws, can leave one partner feeling stuck in the middle and having to take sides. Understanding how to communicate our emotional needs to our partner is just as important as learning how to listen to our partner’s needs.
My practice philosophy is driven by the belief that self-awareness is key to making the changes we seek.
